The History of Heritage Family Farms: A Century of Stewardship

Farming Illinois since 1902

The Early Generations (1902–1969) The history of Heritage Family Farms began in 1902, when Jerelyn (Clausen) Green’s great-grandfather first broke ground in the rich soil of Arthur, Illinois. From the very beginning, the operation was built on a foundation of faith and hard work—values that have been carefully preserved by each succeeding generation. These principles were carried forward by Jerelyn’s grandfather, Paul Clausen, who helped the farm grow and adapt to the changing times of the early 20th century.

The family’s connection to the land deepened further with Jerelyn’s father, Lloyd Clausen, who was born in the house that still stands on the original home farm today. Growing up in that home, the family shared a life centered around the cycles of the harvest and a deep-seated respect for the soil. By raising his children in the same environment where he was born, the family ensured that the love for the land remained a central part of their identity, preparing the next generation to step into their roles as stewards of the farm.

The Era of Transition (1970–1989) As the 1970s arrived, the farm entered a new chapter of growth and partnership. In 1970, Jerelyn married Mike Green, and together with Lloyd Clausen, they formed Clausen & Green Farms. At that time, the operation was a diverse mix of 2,200 acres of corn, soybeans, and alfalfa, alongside a herd of 250 feeder cattle. Mike and Jerelyn’s sons, Cory and Justin, grew up during these years, following their father and grandfather through the fields. By the early 1980s, the family made the strategic decision to discontinue the cattle operation, choosing instead to focus their resources and passion entirely on row crop farming.

The Modern Era & Heritage Family Farms (2008–Present) The farm continued to thrive through the late 90s, even establishing a trucking company to support grain hauling. However, the most significant change occurred in 2008. To honor the growing family and the inclusion of Mike and Jerelyn’s sons and their daughter-in-law, Monica, the name was officially changed to Heritage Family Farms. This name reflects our belief that we are merely temporary stewards of this land, holding it in trust for those who come after us. Today, Mike, Jerelyn, Cory, and Justin manage the daily operations with the same integrity that Jerelyn’s great-grandfather possessed over 120 years ago.

Our Core Values: Looking Toward the 6th Generation Our mission remains simple: to create an innovative environment based on integrity, hard work, and family values. As the 6th generation—our children—begins to grow up on this black dirt, we are reminded of our responsibility to the land. We treat every landowner with respect and maintain the highest standards of stewardship, ensuring that the history of Heritage Family Farms is still only in its early chapters. We are eternally thankful for the generations gone by, and we look forward to the future of agriculture with hope and gratitude.
